Our History
The Caroline Co. Humane Society, Inc., was established in the mid-1980’s by a group of local residents. In 1994, it was re-established in memory of Christina Blades Fleetwood, granddaughter of honorary member Mrs. Henrietta Eaton. Christina was tragically killed while trying to rescue a stray cat from a county road.
In its early years, CCHS worked with the Caroline County Commissioners to develop new animal control ordinances and to improve animal welfare in the county. Volunteers were trained as investigators and contracted with the County to investigate cruelty and abuse of animals.

In 1995 plans were made to construct a new animal shelter to replace the local County Animal Control site on Hobbs Road. Without the luxury of a modern shelter, CCHS volunteers and board members rescued and cared for unwanted animals in their homes. An active adoption program was made possible through the use of a website and public advertising.

Over the years funds were raised and in 1999, in venture with the USDA and County of Caroline, CCHS was able to erect the first Animal Shelter in the county. Today, CCHS consists of a governing Board of Directors, Executive Director, and staff.
Programs have been developed to provide Humane Education, Spay/Neuter for low income County residents, and promote responsible pet care and adoptions of hundreds of homeless animals.
